Nap Maps

The 'Nap Maps' series features various cartographic representations of all the local paths and pavements that I have trudged down during attempts to get a baby to sleep in a pram.  Produced as trace monoprints, the pathways are made strange and enchanting through the blindness of the printmaking process, becoming disembodied cyphers in moon-like roundels. I wanted the visual language of the nap maps to recall medieval and early modern cosmographic images, in order to inject some esoteric mysticism into the tedious reality of my mundane domestic walks. I was thinking about mappae mundi, lunar charts, Renaissance experiments in cartographic projection, and Robert Hooke's printed representations of materials down a microscope.  ​
